 Stratified Random Sampling Definition

Stratified sampling is an important type of probability sampling methods in which researchers divided larger population into smaller groups. These small groups made from population shows homogeneous characteristics.
A stratified random sampling is a method of selecting sampling in which whole population divided into homogeneous group.
Researchers made strata from larger population to complete sampling procedure. These type of sampling technique samples collection done through random selection.
Due to random selection of individual form strata these method of sampling known as stratified sampling.

Stratified Random Sampling

Do you know? Why researchers believe in using stratified sampling in research. When your selected population for research work consists of extensive individual.
To make sampling methods more easy researchers (you) make small groups of individual or strata consisting whole population characteristics.
By making small homogeneous group from larger population you can collect data randomly more easily. Sample collection done through stratified sampling methods every individual must follow and should be in one stratum.

Description of stratified random sampling

Stratified random sampling one of the type of sampling technique used by researchers. Stratified random sampling used when researcher want to find out accurate conclusion from different groups of people's from extensive population.

If you want to apply stratified sampling technique for your research work then you have use simple probability sampling.

Researchers can divide extensive larger population according to his purpose of analysis like age, shape, size, colour, income, geographically and such like that ways. These method of sampling used when you wanted to make relationship between two groups.

Types Stratified Random Sampling

There are mainly two types of stratified random sampling are studied in research methodology. Researchers use these type of sampling techniques when population is very diverse.
1. Proportionate stratified random sampling
2. Disproportionate stratified random sampling
Proportionate stratified random sampling used by researcher when he wants to collect sample in fixed proportionate ways. Let understand this type of sampling techniques with the help of examples.
Suppose you want to do data collection of soil samples from various regions of the United States. You had collected 500 sample from Washington DC, 100 samples from newyork, and 250 sample from California.
Now you need to make these small groups of sample into fixed proportionate. To make it proportionate researchers applied fixed percentage or one constant fraction on selecting sample from these sub groups of population.
Like for first sub group 500*0.6 = 30 sample selected. Second sub group 100*0.6 = 60 sample and for third sub groups 250*0.6 = 150 sample selected.
Disproportionate stratified random sampling researchers freely applied different types of fraction or percentage for the selection of sample number from the population according to his research purposes.

Difference between proportionate stratified and disproportionate stratified random sampling

Only one difference exist between these two types of stratified sampling. In proportionate stratified random sampling researchers applied one fraction or constant percentage over selection of sample from subgroups of population.
Whereas in case of disproportionate stratified random sampling researchers freely applied different different fraction or percentage for the collection of samples from sub group of larger population.

When to use stratified random sampling

Do want to use stratified random sampling according to your research work then you must able to make sample sub groups from extensive population.
Generally you feel the requirements of using stratified random sampling when you think that different sub groups of population have different mean values.
Due to these reasons researchers prefer to these data collection techniques in probability sampling.
When you want qualitative research results for your research work then you can use stratified random sampling.
